She was trained in Birmingham, in medicine and paediatrics, and subsequently came to Great Ormond Street Hospital to train in paediatric neurology. After completing PhD in imaging in focal epilepsy she was consultant at Great Ormond Street Hospital since 1996. She converted to an academic position, and subsequently promoted to Reader in 2004 and Professor in 2007 

JHC focused in research on optimising outcomes in the early onset epilepsies, including epidemiology, clinical trials and outcome studies. 

In 2007 I received the ‘Ambassador for Epilepsy award from the International League Against Epilepsy, 2015 an OBE for services to children with epilepsy, and in 2018 the Clinical Research Award from the American Epilepsy Society, and the Frank Ford Award for contribution to Paediatric Neurology by the International Child Neurology Association.

She is a “first” in all: in 2008-2010 she was the first and only woman to be elected as President of the British Paediatric Neurology Association, and in 2013, the first woman to be elected to the management committee of the ILAE, followed by 2021-2025 first woman President elect of the ILAE
